Ericsson (News - Alert) today announced that it has reached a deal with Brasil Telecom for its WCDMA/HSPA network and integration of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).

The agreement is expected to help Brasil Telecom (News - Alert) increase its network capacity to handle higher traffic and also offer advanced broadband and multimedia services.

Under the contract, Ericsson will deploy the WCDMA/HSPA radio access network in five states of Brazil and will also serve as the exclusive supplier for 2G/3G common core network. Ericsson also will also manage training and support services.

Ericsson is implementing its Mobile Packet Backbone Network (Mobile-PBN) solution to provide telecom quality IP transport and to facilitate faster introduction of high-quality multimedia services. IMS would further help by bringing different networks under a single service environment enabling Brasil Telecom to introduce multimedia voice, data, audio and video services across multiple networks efficiently.

Francisco Santiago, vice president of Brasil Telecom, said, “This contract marks a significant step towards an all-IP network and is further recognition of our strong partnership. Ericsson’s local capabilities in production and implementation will allow us to boost network capacity and extend our market leadership in broadband by offering customers seamless access to our range of broadband services in a very short time.”

Johan Wibergh, president of Ericsson Brazil, said, “We are honored to be selected by Brasil Telecom as the main supplier for its WCDMA/HSPA network, powered with our IMS solution. Brazil is a very demanding market for both operators and vendors, and our solutions will enable Brasil Telecom to offer its customers state-of-the-art multimedia services with a very short time-to-market due to our local capabilities.”

Ericsson officials say the company has signed more than 50 contracts for IMS, of which 22 are already commercially launched. Its product and service portfolio include mobile and fixed network infrastructure and broadband and multimedia solutions and serves more than 195 million subscribers through its communications services and managed networks.
