Vonage Closer to 100 Percent VoIP E911 Coverage

By Johanne Torres

VoIP service provider Vonage is moving pretty quickly to achieve 100 percent VoIP E911 coverage. The company announced on Tuesday that over 90 percent of its subscriber lines are now equipped with E911 service, a feature that associates a physical address with the calling party's telephone number automatically.

VoIP providers had to step up to the plate and get their E911 access up and running after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC (News - Alert)) ordered they do so back in June last year. The agency gave the companies 120 days to complete the difficult task. Vonage (News - Alert) worked closely with local Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs), across the country to turn on E911 for as many customers as quickly as it could. Vonage is currently testing new PSAPs which are VoIP-ready every day.

“Today over 90 percent of our U.S. subscriber lines have full E911 capability, which is a tremendous step for Vonage,” said Vonage’s CEO Michael Snyder. “Vonage will continue to work with the FCC, regulators, Congress and public safety until PSAPs across the nation are equipped with E911.”

Today’s news follows Vonage and Motorola's (News - Alert) announcement yesterday about the introduction of a new co-branded VoIP adaptor with router, the Motorola VT2142.

Specifically, the device single is a port router equipped with a 2-line telephone adaptor, configured with Vonage’s service. The Motorola VT2142 will be available online, at no cost, thanks to a $49.99 instant rebate (customers will be charged a $9.95 shipping and handling fee and a $29.99 activation fee). The companies plan to soon also offer the product in retail stores.
