US LEC Upgrades Network with Tekelec Switches

IP
, data and voice service provider US LEC decided to upgrade its network with additional Tekelec T-9000 digital switches. The companies announced their new contract this Thursday.
Tekelec (News - Alert) T-9000 switches features include provisioning for both traditional voice and VoIP
services capabilities. These features will enable US LEC to add customers to its switches based on their individual needs.
“The Tekelec 9000 gives US LEC a uniquely flexible and cost-effective solution to transition its network to IP and meet virtually any deployment scenario for both traditional voice or VoIP services,” said Tekelec’s Adrian Fitzgerald, vice president, North America sales and global channels. “US LEC gains additional revenue sources by expanding its services, while at the same time reducing costs associated with expanding its network.”
Specifically, US LEC added the Tekelec digital switches to its current set of Lucent 5ESS AnyMedia digital switches. The move will enable the company to equip more than half of its network with next-generation, IP-enabled switching capabilities. The company has been upgrading its network by adding IP-based enhancements lately.
“One of our 2006 goals was evolving the US LEC network for the delivery of next-generation, IP-based services without accelerating our capital spending past our historic levels,” said US LEC’s senior vice president of engineering Alan Fitzpatrick in a statement. “Not only will the Tekelec softswitch enable us to provide new customer solutions, but the capital cost of adding new customers is incrementally lower.”
Today’s news follows Tekelec’s announcement last month about inking a similar contract with Nevada Telephone, a Las Vegas-based competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC
), which deployed Tekelec's complete switching suite including the Tekelec 9000 Distributed Switching Solution, Tekelec 7000 VoIP Class 5 Packet Switch and Tekelec 6000 VoIP Application Server
. The move will enable Nevada Telephone to offer VoIP-based telephony services.
The new partnership allowed Nevada Telephone to replace its existing switch with the Tekelec 9000 to support the telecom's subscriber base growth from 115 customers to more than 24,000.
The carrier also deployed the Tekelec 6000 to introduce new features for enhanced VoIP services, such as unified messaging, softphone, user-scheduled and on-demand conferencing, find-me and Web Portal capabilities that support visual voicemail, click-to-dial and integration of directories and calendars with telephony features.
