VoIP for iPod Touch

December 01, 2008

Apple (News - Alert) iPod "Touch" users who want to use the device for VoIP can do so using the latest firmware 2.2 release. Firmware 2.2 upgrades the recording capability of Touch devices, namely the ability to record from third party microphones connected through its dock port.

According to iPodNN, many of these recording devices have been on the market since the standard iPod 5.5 generation, yet were previously not supported by the first-gen iPod Touch. Error messages that would previously appear when using such devices with the Touch are now said to have vanished, which effectively opens the way for VoIP functionality using the Touch.

Separately, Nimbuzz has released a free application available through the iPhone App store that lets users call, chat and send and receive instant messages using Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, Facebook (News - Alert), MySpace, AIM, Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ and Jabber. IM buddy calling over Wi-Fi is also available to Yahoo, Google Talk, Skype and Windows Live Messenger.
