Packet Island's 'Lite' Version of PacketSmart Geared for SMBs

Tastes great, less filling!

VoIP network testing and monitoring solutions provider Packet Island, Inc. last year released the “lite” version of its PacketSmart VoIP-Data lifecycle management solution geared for small and mid-sized enterprise customers.

Dubbed “Enterprise Lite,” SMBs can use this affordable yet powerful solution to pre-assess their data networks for VoIP readiness; verify LAN/WAN QoS design based on TOS or Diffserv; monitor live VoIP calls (SIP-based) on a 24x7 basis; troubleshoot VoIP signaling issues; conduct remote packet capture with Ethereal/Wireshark compatibility monitor top-10 data flows on a 24x7 basis; and generate a variety of on-demand reports to summarize SLAs.

The platform comes pre-installed on a Dell (News - Alert) server and a set of five 4"x5" micro-appliances. These network probes function as “sniffers” to detect packet loss, bottlenecks and other issues, and also double up as VoIP call generators for assessment purposes.

The company claims the solution is ideal for small and mid-sized companies deploying VoIP for a handful of branch offices using mixed network topologies and multiple ISP WANs.

Packet Island (News - Alert) customer SixL was among the first to trial the PacketSmart Enterprise edition to manage its mixed-vendor VoIP-data network spanning over 20 branch office sites. According to Ron Denning at SixL, the solution’s data and VoIP flow analysis capabilities allowed the company to quickly characterize user complaints on VoIP quality and identify sources of congestion. “Without the comprehensive flow-by-flow visibility this solution has provided us, we would be struggling to support our VoIP-Data services," Denning said in a release.

Praveen Kumar (News - Alert), CEO of Packet Island, Inc, points out that while traditional SNMP-based solutions are great at monitoring servers and network devices, they fall short when it comes to managing converged media.

“As VoIP adoption hits the mainstream, what enterprises need is a comprehensive product that can help them manage the lifecycle of their converged media networks that go beyond SNMP monitoring,” Kumar said. “With PacketSmart-Lite, we are offering the combined functionalities of a VoIP assessment tool, VoIP monitoring tool, VoIP verification tool, remote packet capture tool, traffic flow monitor, and Top-N flow monitor, all in one package. Bought as separate vendor tools, these capabilities would cost tens of thousands of dollars. However, with our all-inclusive PacketSmart-Lite package, customers get a complete package for under $8,000.”

Last September Packet Island announced that it had entered into an OEM agreement with Ring Carrier, allowing Ring Carrier to private brand the Packet Island PacketSmart platform for inclusion in its MSP/ISP softswitch.
