After Twitter Banned, Chinese President Takes up Microblogging
By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor
The leader of country known for its censorship of free speech has apparently followed the example of other world leaders and taken to Twitter-style microblogging. Ironically, it happened after the government banned Twitter.
Chinese president Hu Jintao has reportedly launched a microblog in spite of his government’s efforts to silence microbloggers in China.
Instead of Twitter – which authorities have blocked since 2009 – Hu’s blog is powered by service run by the newspaper People’s Daily (the official newspaper of the Communist party). Thus, it’s only visible to registered users.
