Sterk's Super Foods selling 2 more stores

(Times, The (Munster, IN) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Mar. 30--HAMMOND -- Sterk's Super Foods has sold two of its stores, one in East Chicago's Indiana Harbor neighborhood and the other in Sauk Village.

The Hammond-based chain, which operated nine stores as recently as October, also is in the midst of permanently closing its underperforming stores at 6529 Columbia Ave., Hammond, and at 1830 45th St., Munster. The closing dates originally were slated for Saturday, but they have been pushed back to April 7.

The store at 2121 Columbus Drive, East Chicago, is being sold to ShopRite Finer Foods of East Chicago, which is owned by Buy-N-Save Inc. of Chicago, according to an announcement sent to The Times.

The location will continue operating under the Sterk's name, store manager Mike Mireles said.

The East Chicago store is changing its supplier to Certified Grocers of Hodgkins Park, Ill., from Franklin Park-based Central Grocers. After Central's Centrella products are sold, they will be replaced with Certified's, he said.

In mid-February, Sterk's announced that Buy-N-Save Inc. had an agreement to buy the Sterk's store at 22240 Governors Highway, Richton Park.

Neither Joe Kolavo, president of Sterk's, nor Jim Denges, vice president-assistant general manager of Central Grocers, which owns the majority of the stock in Sterk's Super Food's, returned calls for comment.

Central Grocers owns 100 percent of the Strack & Van Til's corporation. It supplies groceries to the 11 stores operated under the Strack's name and the 11 run under the chain's Ultra Foods banner. Plus, Central Grocers supplies its Centrella-brand private label products to the other members of the co-op, including WiseWay Super Foods and Walt's Finer Foods.

The Sterk's store at Sauk Trail and Torrence Avenue in Sauk Village is being acquired by Robertsons Finer Foods of Dolton, which does business under the name Fairway Finer Foods. Sterk's announcement said that store will retain Central Grocers as its supplier.

No one from Robertsons could be reached for comment Thursday. However, Mireles said Fairway also is purchasing the Sterk's store in Lockport, Ill.

Sterk's Super Foods also operates stores in Calumet City and Park Forest, and on Columbia Avenue in East Chicago.

"I'm told they're all for sale," Mireles said.
