London Olympics 2012 'Most Connected Games Ever,' Thanks to Hosted VoIP

In addition to all the other concerns and preparations being made for the 2012 London Olympics, including the doubling of planned security, Telappliant officials say a raft of communications infrastructure is being installed at the Olympic venues.
American officials have reportedly expressed concern that the security planned for the Olympics will be insufficient to deal with the reported and expected threats, and Olympic officials have added about twice as many officers as previously assigned.
There should be no concerns about the VoIP capabilities, however. BT (News - Alert) has confirmed delivery of “a significant quantity of technology to 25 of the locations for the sporting jewel, which is due to begin in July 2012,” according to a recent Telappliant blog, noting that some 16,500 handsets are to be deployed across all 94 Olympic sites.
And the Olympics are going cloud, with a hosted VoIP network described as “one of the key features of the system,” that is expected to “help bosses at each of the venues communicate with each other,” Telappliant officials say, noting that the work has been completed by BT in its role as an official communications services partner.
The equipment has been tested in a number of events, and Olympic organizers say they’re confident in the ability of the equipment to perform.
Stuart Hill, BT vice-president for central government and London 2012, added that millions of calls, texts and e-mails are to be supported at the time of the Games by BT's technology and systems: "As part of making London 2012 the most connected Games ever, our hosted voice services are perfect for LOCOG because they provide the ability to grow quickly," he stated.
